What is checked
- 16 characters, letters and digits in the right places;
- a valid month letter (A B C D E H L M P R S T) and a real day;
- a place code that exists among 9,864 comune codes and 239 country codes;
- the check letter, recalculated from the first 15 characters.
A correctly formed code may still never have been issued. Only the Agenzia delle Entrate service can tell you that.
Questions
Does “correctly formed” mean the code is real?
No. It means the code follows the rules. Whether it was issued is known only to the Agenzia delle Entrate.
How do I check a company’s codice fiscale?
Companies have an 11-digit numeric code, checked like a VAT number: use the VAT number check.
